What is stenography?

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

If, we go through with the Oxford dictionary- than, Stenography is the action or process of writing in shorthand and transcribing the shorthand on a typewriter or on a compurter. If, we go with the words, then in Greek language Steno = Narrow and Graphien = to Write. It means writing in short.

Actually, Stenography is the process of writing in shorthand. Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed and brevity of writing as compare to longhand i.e. a more common method of writing in any language. In longhand basically we can write at the speed of 30 to 40 words per minute in any language but when we talk about shorthand the speed will go above 150 wpm also.

Actually, shorthand or stenography is a skill of writing in languages in their shorthand script which are predefined by the writers such as pitman shorthand. Pitman shorthand is a script of shorthand to write in English at the speed of more than 150 wpm. Shorthand scripts are available for most of the languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Konkani etc. in India. It is also available in foregin languages also.

Difference between Stenotypist and Stenographer: -

Shorthand or stenography comes in existences for writing speeches, dictations, etc. in any languages as it is impossible to write it in longhand. Shorthand or stenography and Stenotypist are two different skills. I watched many times on youtube and other social media platforms that many users show these two skills as a same skill or they mixed these skills. But, it is very essential to know that Stenography or shorthand and stenotype are two different skills. In stenography, a stenographer write the matter or dictation with his pencil or pen on the paper in shorthand scripts and then transcribe it on typewriters and computers while a stenotypist directly type the dictation on the stenotype machine with the help of a special type of keyboard used by the stenotypists.

How do Stenotype and Stenography comes in existence?

We write all dictation in shorthand or stenograpy and transcript the same. It is require to make reports or letters in government or private offices as per the officer's vocal speeches. From here, we start to feel a need to stenographers or stenotypists. It is always a need to record all speeches given by various leaders in legislative assemblies and Parliament etc. and in courts, there is always a need to record the decisions on various cases. Therefore, we need to have stenographers or stenotypists to directly write or records the vocal speeches of leaders and judges on papers. In addition, it is known to all that nobody can write in a script of any language with the speed of more than 30-40 words per minutes and it is impossible to write the vocal speeches given by leaders and officers with this speed. Therefore, a special script has to be prepared by which we start to write more than a speed of 50 words per minute to 150 words per minute. Now, many stenographers are being used their skills and write more than 90 or 100 wpm to 150 wpm and transcript the same. However, it can be possible with will power and hard work.
